Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The John Werner Welland papers (1951-2000) consist of materials that focus on Welland's career in the United States Air Force. Included are correspondence, diplomas, medical and personnel records, passports, death records, and other papers. Welland (1933-1991) was born in New York and was one of many who became known as an "Atomic Veteran" due his work for the Air Force during the atmospheric nuclear testing program carried out by the United States in the 1940s to 1960s. Many of the materials in this collection result from Welland's years living in Spain (circa 1989-1991) and are, therefore, written in Spanish. Social Security numbers were cut out of select documents by the donor.
