Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Emily Dow Partridge Smith Young papers (1832-1970) is a compilation materials concerning Emily Young (1824-1899) copied by relatives from original manuscripts. Included are two autobiographies (1877 and 1884) and a diary (1880-1893). Also included are a biographical sketch by Emmeline B. Wells published in the Women's Exponent (1908), a biography by Eugenia Y. Hardy Rampton, a granddaughter (1970), and an obituary published in the Women's Exponent (1899). An additional item is a typescript of a letter from Joseph Smith to Edward Partridge (1832) found with Emily Young's diary. The papers provide detailed descriptions of the persecutions of the Mormons, as well as the hardships and joys in her personal life.
