Scope and Contents

Shumway, a mine owner and prospector, was interviewed by Clare Engle in Orchard Mesa, Colorado, and Kathy Biel in Blanding, Utah. Subjects: early mining days, government agencies, horses in the mines, World War II and the atomic bomb, competing with Union Carbide, Red Canyon, innacurate assays and other dishonest practices, boom years, "black box" incident, future of the Colorado Pleateau, clean-up contractors, Navajos as miners, Navajos and Whites working together, dependability of Navajos, superstitions, future of mining on the reservation (74 pages, 32 pages).
