Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Nicholas Groesbeck Smith papers (1899-1963) contain diaries, correspondence, and a compiled biography. The diaries were written by Nicholas Groesbeck Smith (1881-1945), they begin during his first mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) to the Netherlands. After his mission, he married Florence Gay (1886-1970). Some of the correspondence are letters he wrote to her. He served as a Mission President for the LDS Church, in South Africa; Los Angeles, California; and the Northwestern States Mission. During his Northwestern States Mission Presidency, he was called to become an assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The biography is a transcript of the diaries, as well as information taken from the children and family of Nicholas Groesbeck and Florence Gay Smith. A section of the second diary from March 1905 has been blocked out, the author of the biography, Lavina Fielding Anderson, has noted that this was done before she began to copy the diaries.
