Scope and Contents
From the Collection:
The Charles I. Wheat papers contain thirteen letters from Dale Morgan to Carl Wheat concerning research in Western history, including attempts to find the William Lorton diary. Included are transcripts of articles from various Illinois and Iowa newspapers, including the Oquawka Spectra and Knoxville Journal, concerning overland travel to the California gold fields in 1850. Folder 2 contains a proposal for a book by Wheat titled, First Visible Footsteps of the White Man in Death Valley. The proposal also contains a letter to Miss Caroline Wenzel.
