Swearing Elders, news clippings and notes, 1950

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 6

Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Thomas A. Blakely papers consist of research materials used in the writing of a paper entitled "The Swearing Elders" presented by Blakely at the Sunstone Symposium, August 1985. The "Swearing Elders" were a group of mostly LDS university faculty under the leadership of Sterling M. McMurrin of the University of Utah who organized a study group to discuss LDS-related topics. They were accused of anti-LDS activities by some leaders of the LDS Church. Materials include correspondence, typescripts of interviews with some of the "elders," invitations to meetings and responses, clippings, and a transcript of a symposium on education, 1950.
