The Union (St. George, Utah), 1978

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 8

Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Antoine R. Ivins papers (1878-1978) include a typescript of a journal which Ivins kept from the time he was called to be president of the Mexican Mission and a member of the LDS Church's First Council of Seventies in 1931 until December 1933. Mixed in with Ivins' journal entries are telegrams, news clippings, and letters that are often commented on in corresponding entries or on which Ivins typed comments. The journal comments on Ivins' interactions with other LDS Church officials, his trips to various cities within the Mexican Mission (in Mexico and the southwestern United States), as well as practical details such as gas mileage, hotel conditions, and dinner arrangements. A less thorough scrapbook, made up of correspondence, an itinerary, invitations, and news clippings, details a tour of the LDS North Central States Mission made by Ivins in 1952. The other documents in the collection are chiefly church certificates received in conjunction with Ivins' marriage, missionary work, and other church participation (Ivins' "Last Will and Testament" is also included). The first folder of the collection contains documents and correspondence (principally about fertilizer) dealing with the Laie Plantation, where Ivins was when he was called to head the LDS Mexican Mission. Ivins died in 1967. A single copy of the October 4, 1878, St. George, Utah newspaper, The Union, has been added to the collection as well.
