Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Utahns for Responsible Public Spending records (1988-1995) contains correspondence, articles, notes, petitions, Olympic committee information, venues information, Utah Sports Authority documents, government files, and other documents concerning Salt Lake City's bid for the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympic Games. The organization was founded in the late 1980s and was against holding the Olympics in Salt Lake City. Correspondence and various documents written by the Utahns for Responsible Public Spending (URPS), including notes, press releases, speeches given by Stephen Pace, mailings, information concerning charitable solicitations, a winter Olympics survey, volunteer information, public comment and question sheets, and articles from Citizens, an opinion newspaper, are housed in box 1. Information concerning a URPS lawsuit, petitions, voting districts, and voter registration forms can be found in box 2. Information about Olympic bid committees, including the Salt Lake Olympic Bid Committee, the United States Olympic Bid Committee, and the International Olympic Bid Committee, as well as resolutions, contracts, and financial documents produced by these organizations, comprise box 3. Utah Sports Authority documents concerning the Olympics are contained in box 4. Venues information, including proposals and records concerning the Olympic speed skating oval, ice sheets, the winter sports park, and the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, is housed in box 5. Governmental files, including agreements, information about the Salt Palace renovation and expansion, and other documents concerning government affairs, proposed sales tax increases, and state budget information can be found in box 6. News articles from 1990 to 1995 comprise box 7, and an anti-Olympics T-shirt is housed in box 8. Finally, oversize documents, including the Spring 1992 Citizens for True Tax Reform newsletter and a poster, "Financing and the 2002 Olympic Winter Games," are located in the two oversize folders.
