Mexico Scrapbook, 1934

 File — Box: 2, Volume: 1

Scope and Contents

This scrapbook documents a trip that BYU journalism professor, Harrison R. Merrill took to Mexico City in 1934 with his friend, Dr. George Hanson (geology professor) and their wives. They drove from Provo to Mexico City and back. The purpose of the trip was to visit the ancient ruins that surround Mexico City. The scrapbook contains valuable information regarding Mexican history, culture, and modern cities such as Laredo, Acapulco, and Cuernavaca. Merrill details his impressions of the ancient pyramids and ruins. The scrapbook has his descriptions of places such as Monte Alban, Copilco, Teotihuacan, and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl. He mentions that scientists suspect the ancient inhabitants were the Toltecs and Aztecs, but he concludes that they must have been the remains of Book of Mormon peoples.
