Correspondence: Sterling M. McMurrin and Hugh B. Brown, 1949
File — Box: 291, Folder: 2
Identifier: XII
Scope and Contents
McMurrin informed Brown that President Heber Grant ordered the L.D.S. Department of Instruction to remove him from his seminary position because of a December 1939 article which apeared in the Department's "Week-Day Religious Education." The article was entitled: "Toward a Christian Ethic: A Possible Interpretation of the Teaching of Jesus in Terms of the Mormon Concept of Deity." Sterling admitted that he had never been an orthodox Mormon and was cognizant of the fact that his views were "occasionally the object of severe criticism." He further stated that "from that time on many apparently knew me as a person who was not in good standing."
