Scope and Contents

  1. "This photograph was taken circa 1933 in Stevenson, Ayshire, Scotland at the intersection of George Place with George Street. The home in the background is Number 1 George Place, the home of Alex McMurdo and Nellie O'Hare McMurdo. George Place was a cul-de-sac made up of nine two roomed houses, originally built in the late 19th century to house miners working in the nearby "George" coal mine. The tenth house in the row was "Janefield Cottage"-the Reid family home. The back wall of George Place looked out on the sand dunes of the Firth of Clyde."

  23. Photograph number 2: "Group photo taken circa 1934 at the entrance to the Buchanan home, 5 George Place, Ayrshire, Scotland. Most of these people lived in George Place or in the adjoining George Street. Some unidentified people might be summer visitors from Glasgow or Paisley who rented our kitchens for their summer holidays at Stevenson beaches. They were termed "letting folk." George Place was originally built circa 1880 as a miner's row and consisted of nine two roomed houses--at the end of a cul-de-sac was "Janefield Cottage," the home of the Reid family. [Frederick Buchanan's] great grandfather John Reid was a mason and may indeed have built the homes in George Place. [Frederick Buchanan's] parents were married and [his] brother born there. [Frederick Buchanan] was born at Number 5."
