No. 824 Drew Hicken, 2012

 File — Box: 75, Folder: 18

Scope and Contents

  1. Utah snowboarding pioneer and Salty Peaks cofounder Drew Hicken got into skiing at a very young age, and transitioned to snowboarding in junior high. He remembers making his own board with his dad’s help, but his first commercial board was a Burton Performer. Drew discusses the brief moment when Alta allowed snowboarding and the big break for Utah snowboarding when Park West became the first mountain to invite boarders to the whole mountain. He went to the World Championships in Breckenridge in 1986, and helped found Salty Peaks to pay for competition travel. He describes the flavor of the 1980s snowboarding world, where training was minimal and the scene was casual and crazy. Drew talks about Salty Peaks and his brief venture Shift, competition between Milosport and Salty Peaks, the evolution of the snowboard industry, and finishes reminiscing about the Salty Eight team.
  2. Project: Outdoor Recreation oral history project.
  3. Interviewer: Erin Halcomb
