File — Box: 80, Folder: 1
Scope and Contents
- After graduating from Iowa State University in 1974, John Cederquist taught high school for four years. Cederquist then decided to move to Duluth, Minnesota, to pursue a career in outdoor recreation. In 1979, he moved to Utah and earned a Master’s degree in Leisure Studies in the College of Health at the University of Utah. Cederquist became a volunteer trip coordinator and equipment rental specialist in Campus Recreation Services at the University of Utah. In 1980, he took a full-time position managing the field house on campus. After that he was assistant coordinator in the outdoor program for two years and then worked as the coordinator of the program for six years. In 1990, Cederquist took a position running the outdoor recreation program for Leisure Studies. Cederquist describes the changes the program underwent after he started working there. At one time, he organized an action to ensure that the program would not be downsized. In 2007, Nate Bricker joined Cederquist to manage the program. Although Cederquist retired in 2012, Bricker has continued to manage the program with another administrator. Cederquist describes the overall evolution of the program into UExplore and Outdoor Adventures, the program’s mission, the types of classes provided in the program, and the skills the students gain from the courses the program provides. Nate Bricker describes the growth and mission of the program from his perspective, and how the program has evolved since Cederquist retired. He talks about encouraging students to do interdisciplinary work with other departments across the university. Bricker describes the benefits of taking honors students on river trips and how much it improves their relationships with their peers.
