Scope and Contents

Howard (b. 1922) talks about family life and growing up in the Depression. He volunteered for the Army Air Corps and was inducted in 1942, taking his basic traing at Miami Beach, Florida. Having had pre-war experience as an aircraft mechanic, he was assigned to the Mobile Air Depot at Buckley Field near Mobile, Alabama. He was shipped to the Pacific in 1943 and describes being on the USS Sea Corporal when it was attacked by a Japanese submarine. He was assigned to bases in Australia, the Philipines, and also served on a small airstrip on Horn Island.
