Scope and Contents
From the Collection:
This collection reflects the lives and accomplishments of two of Salt Lake's most prominent benefactors: Glen Walker Wallace and John McChrystal Wallace. Although the photographs were originally separated into two different collections, it was decided to keep them together as one collection organized by distinct sections. This structure recognizes them as individuals with their own accomplishments and contributions, but also recognizes them as a team who supported one another in their endeavors.
The collection begins with the photographs of the Walker family in Box 1, including Glenn's father, Matthew H. Walker, and their home in Yeadon, England. Please note that due to late identification of the items, the photographs of the Rob Walker house in Salt Lake are found in Box 2, Folder 23, and were not added to these early Walker materials. Following are photographs dealing specifically with Glenn Walker Wallace and her accomplishments as a musician, ballerina, and honored patron of the arts in Salt Lake City. Included are photographs of Mrs. Wallace receiving the honor of Grand Cross Dame of the Knightly Order of St. Brigitte in 1967, being inducted to the Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem in 1970, and receiving her honorary doctorate from the University of Utah in 1975. Unfortunately, there are no photographs relating specifically to her contribution to the arts with the exception of a rather poor group of proofs of Ballet West on tour.
The next section, beginning in Box 1 and completed in Box 2 illustrates John McChrystal Wallace and his achievements as a civic leader and entrepreneur. The section begins with a photo of the Henry Wallace family (John's great-grandfather), and photos of John's parents, William R. and Annie McChrystal Wallace. Following are photos related specifically to John McChrystal Wallace, including photos with business partners, and with other dignitaries such as Marriner S. Eccles, Chairman of the Federal Reserve during the Roosevelt Administration, and Stewart Udall, Secretary of the Interior under Johnson. Because business partners could not be identified, and because of the large number of enterprises in which Wallace was involved, no attempt was made to separate the photos by these subjects, but they were arranged chronologically as much as possible. Following this are photos of Wallace receiving his honorary doctorate from the University of Utah in 1965, and then photos that were identified as specifically relating to Western Airlines, Walker Bank and his mining interests.
The final section, ending Box 2, reflects their lives together, and contains photos of the Wallaces together with their children. Also in this section are photos of the Wallace home on Walker Lane in Cottonwood, some of their friends, including Gina Bachauer, and finally, miscellaneous and unidentified photographs.
Box 3 contains oversized items, mostly portraits, that are arranged in a similar manner as the rest of the collection.
