Scope and Contents
From the Collection:
The James Westfield photograph collection consists of 5 boxes containing approximately 1,340 photographs and negatives, primarily black-and-white photograph prints. The images mostly depict mining activities in the Eastern United States and primarily date from the 1950s and 1960s. Subjects primarily include mining accidents and disasters and safety demonstrations, inspections, and conferences. The majority of the images were created by the United States Bureau of Mines and were collected by James Westfield during the course of his work as Assistant Director of Health and Safety for the Bureau of Mines.

Twenty-four hour advanced notice encouraged. Materials must be used on-site. Access to parts of this collection may be restricted under provisions of state or federal law.
