The Redick N. Allred autobiography (1846-1847) consist of an account by Allred of his experiences in the Mormon Battalion. His experiences beginn 16 July 1846 when, in response to President Polk's orders to Brigham Young, five hundred men were enlisted for one year to march to California in the war with Mexico. They were divided into five companies of one hundred men each. He describes food rations, his company's leaders, and travel back to Winter Quarters in 1847.
