Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Francis Marion Bishop civil war correspondence (1861-1866) consist of thirty letters written by Bishop while a soldier in the Union Army and later as a student at Wesleyan University. His descriptions of the Civil War are particularly rich. He writes about places, people, and events and accompanies these descriptions with pen and ink sketches of battles, army camps, tents, and his wounds. A letter and two articles concerning the donation of the collection and Bishop are also included.
