Papers written by Jan Shipps, 1961-1979

 File — Box: 1

Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Jan Shipps papers (1961-1979) consist of two papers written by Shipps. The first was published in Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought (15:1, 1982) and is a "disciplined reflection" on her life and thoughts about LDS history. The article contains an explanation of review of Samuel Taylor's book, Rocky Mountain Empire: The Latter-day Saints Today. The explanation was necessary since her review was unfavorable and rather long for a standard book review. The 19-page review is also included. Shipps' review of Taylor's book, "Writing about Modern Mormonism: An essay Review on Samuel W. Taylor's Latest Book, with Some Attention Paid to Other Works on the Same Subject," was published in Sunstone. This review and her longer article in Dialogue both discuss whether history should be written from an "insiders" view, or whether an "outsider" has a more objective view and hence writes better history. Correspondence on LDS history research is also included.
