Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Lettie Dewey Campbell personal narrative [transcript] is a two-page photocopy titled, "An Encounter with an Iceberg" (1941). The text describes how, during Campbell's trip home from a mission in Scotland for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the ship she was traveling on struck an iceberg. The steamship, "City of Rome," had departed from Glasgow, Scotland, on August 26, 1898. Five days into the voyage, the vessel hit an iceberg while sailing through dense fog. Five days later, the "City of Rome" arrived safely in New York City. Also included is a photocopy of a news clipping (newspaper and date unknown) regarding the event.
