MKMJAA. Mitsugi M. Kasai Memorial Japanese American Archives

Named in honor of Mr. Kasai for his dedication to preserving the history and culture of Japanese Americans and for a generous bequest he made through his estate. The story told by this archive begins with the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants who came here to work in the railroad, mining, and agricultural industries. Included are records, photographs, journals, oral histories, and films from their settlement. Salt Lake City’s Japantown, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and other U. S. military involvement, relocation to internment camps, and the establishment of Japanese Buddhist and Christian churches are included in the archive.

Abstract Stormy Mitsui (1922-2010) owned and operated the City Cafe in Salt Lake City, Utah with his wife Chiyoko Yokoyama Mitsui. This collection contains photographs, slides and negatives of Stormy Mitsui’s family portraits, events and gatherings, City Café, Stormy's remote control model airplane hobby, vacations to Japan and California, and hunting and fishing.

Theodore Genichi Nagata relocated to the Topaz internment camp with his family in the 1940s. He founded Ted Nagata Graphic Design, Inc. Yeiko Nagasawa Nagata is a native of Salt Lake City, where her family operated the New Sunrise Fish Market for many years.

Nichiren Buddhist Temple records

Abstract The Nichiren Buddhist Temple records (1954-2003) contain correspondence, financial reports, membership records, the church newsletter, and other documents pertaining to the Nichiren Buddhist Temple. The temple (which dates from 1971-1991) was operated in Salt Lake City by Yosh Ito and Reverend Kanai Skokai. There were more than two hundred members, a large percentage of whom were Japanese Americans.
