The Jean Rio Pearce diary (1851-1880) typescript describes her emigration from Liverpool, England, to Salt Lake City, Utah. Pearce's diary entries provide descriptive accounts of sea passage and steamboat and wagon travel. She also includes descriptions of various cities, camps, encounters with Indians, and later, her travels to and from San Francisco to visit her sons. 8 May 1880, her seventieth birthday, marks the last entry in her diary.

There is no information regarding who transcribed the diary or when.

Biographical Sketch

Jean Rio Pearce (b. 1810) emigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, from Liverpool, England, in 1851. She moved to Ogden in 1852 to pursue her trade as a dressmaker. She married Edward Pearce in 1864.
