Scope and Contents

The Charles Lambert journals (1863-1909) were kept by Charles Lambert (1816-1892), a native of Yorkshire, England, and convert to the LDS Church. The collection includes seven typescript volumes detailing Lambert's profession as a stone-cutter. He records daily activities, marriages, births, and deaths. His wife, Mary Alice Cannon Lambert, made entries in the journals after Lambert's death in 1892. She continued the entries until 1909.

Biographical Sketch

Charles Lambert was born in Kirk Deighton, York, Yorkshire, England on 30 August 1816. He became a stone-cutter and began working on various railways at age nineteen. In 1843, he converted to the LDS Church and moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1844. He married Mary Alice Cannon that same year. He met Joseph and Hyrum Smith, worked on the Nauvoo temple, moved to Missouri, then to Salt Lake City. He was president of the 23rd quorom of Seventy and served as clerk in the Seventh Ward for many years. He died in 1892.
