Scope and Contents
This collection contains letters (1831-1894) concerning various events in Utah history. Included are three letters from Brigham Young to Thomas W. Ellerbeck concerning business matters, 1871 and 1876; one letter from Brigham Young requesting the Utah Central Railroad Company to pay over $10,000 to T. W. Ellerbeck, 1871; one letter from Daniel H. Wells to Brig. Gen. W. B. Pace concerning the use of the local militia to protect Sanpete County from attacks, 1867.
Also included is a poem entitled "To Emma by S. M. Kimball;" a blessing for Thomas W. Ellerbeck, 1851; deeds; a diary written by William C. Spence; a diary by an unknown creator; several certificates; and a letter to David T. Lewis regarding family materials and history.
The original items located in box 1, folders 1 and 2 have been removed and placed in Reserve. Access must be given by the Manuscripts Curator and by appointment. An archivist must remain with the item/items if being used.

Thomas Witton Ellerbeck (1829-1895) was born 14 Sep. 1829 in Pendleton, Lancashire, England. He was the son of Thomas Ellerbeck and Mary Witton. He married Martha B. Hyder on 19 Aug. 1852 in Great Salt Lake City, Great Salt Lake Co., Utah Territory; participated in plural marriage. William Charles Spence (1850-1927) was born 3 Dec. 1850 in London, Middlesex, England. He was the son of John Spence and Margery Lisk. He married Cynthia Ann Eldredge on 19 Oct. 1876 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Co., Utah Territory. He was baptized 21 Oct. 1866 in Salt Lake City. He corresponded with Wilford Woodruff about transportation for missionaries and Church members between 1887 and 1898. He died 9 May 1927 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California.
