Biographical Note
Joseph Hatten Carpenter (b. 1861) was the third son of Robert Wright Carpenter, a minister in the Congregational Church of England, and Elizabeth Link Hatten. He moved to the United States and later converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). In the early spring of 1889, Carpenter was asked by Bishop James Watson if he would accept a mission call to the Samoan Islands. He did accept, but heard nothing more about the mission until 1890, one month before the birth of his first child. He was worried about leaving his wife and child but was reassured that they would be taken care of. When his family in England heard of his mission, his mother was very upset. She did not understand why her son would belong to a religion that would take him away from his wife and newborn child.
