Scope and Contents

The Associated Utah Artists records (1940-2006) consist of scrapbooks, a minute book, news clippings, correspondence, and programs concerning this Utah arts organization. The scrapbooks, which make up the bulk of the collection, contain news clippings and articles about the Associated Utah Artists and art exhibits around the state and at the Art Barn.

Organizational History

The Associated Utah Artists held their organizational meeting on 25 June 1940. Objectives included promotion of a "progressive spirit in painting and sculpture by a healthy concern with new media and technique, by a spirit of mutual helpfulness, and an essentially native growth." Charter members included James T. Harwood, LeConte Stewart, Olof Moller, Verla Birrell, Bert Franklin Larsen, Avard Fairbanks, Gordon Cope, Jack Sears, and others. Florence Ware served as the first chairman.
