Biographical Sketch

Byron Owen Colton was born in Provo, Utah, on 15 February 1882 to Byron Oliver and Sarah Maria Smith Colton. He was bishop of the Maeser Ward of the Uintah Stake from 1910 to 1918 and bishop of the Randlett Ward from 1918 to 1920. He was then second counselor in that stake until 1922 when he became the president. Colton graduated from Brigham Young University and served as a county surveyor and school trustee. He married Helen Merkley in 1910.

The Byron O. Colton family papers (1905-1947) consist of correspondence to Byron Owen Colton in Maeser, Utah, from William H. Smart of Roosevelt; correspondence from family and friends; business records and certificates; and a typescript history of the Roosevelt, Utah, LDS Stake, among other papers. Byron Owen Colton (b. 1882) was an LDS Church bishop in the Uintah Stake and later succeeded William H. Smart as president of that stake.
