Biographical Note

John Reese was born in New York in 1808, the son of Colonel John and Susannah Owen Reese. He was a grocer, freighter, trader, and early Nevada official and settler. The eastern Nevada mining district was called Reese River, first named by Captain J. H. Simpson in honor of Colonel John Reese, who first explored the area from Salt Lake City to Carson Valley in 1854.
