Biographical Sketch

Henry Aldous Dixon was born on 29 June 1890 to John DeGrey and Sarah Lewis Dixon in Provo, Utah. He obtained his bachelor of arts degree from Brigham Young University in 1914. Three years later he acquired his master of arts degree from the University of Chicago. In 1937, he received his doctorate in education from the University of Southern California. Dixon served in various capacities in Utah's higher education arena, including being president of Weber College from 1937 to 1953 and president of Utah State Agricultural College (Utah State University) from 1953 until 1954. Dixon resigned his position as president of Utah State Agricultural College to run for Congress a few days before the 1954 general election upon the resignation of Douglas Stringfellow. He not only won this election, but was re-elected in 1956 and 1958. As a congressman, he was an outspoken supporter of former secretary of agriculture Ezra Taft Benson's farm program and led efforts for increased emphasis on western water research and development. Dixon was also a member of many community committees and organizations. Henry Aldous Dixon died in 1967.
