Biographical Sketch

Stephen David Durrant (1902-1975) received his undergraduate degree in Modern Languages and his master's degree in Zoology from the University of Utah in 1929 and 1931, respectively. He received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Kansas in 1950. Throughout Durrant's academic pursuits, he worked in a variety of positions that supplemented his degree work even though it delayed the final award. During the summer of 1931 he served as Ranger Naturalist of Zion National Park. The academic year of 1933 found him back at the University of Utah working as a research assistant with R. V. Chamberlain. After this assignment, he decided to pursue mammalogy as an academic specialty. In 1934, he worked as the biologist-in-charge of a field party to the Humboldt National Forest for the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. In 1935 and 1936, he again worked for Utah State Bureaus in mosquito and gopher control projects. Between 1936 and 1952, Durrant taught in conjunction with his Ph.D. program, first at Berkeley and later at the University of Kansas. He worked in various other capacities and belonged to a number of professional societies.
