Alan K. Engen papers

 Collection
Identifier: ACCN 1601

Scope and Contents

The Alan K. Engen papers (1840-2010) contain drafts and background information related to the publication of Engen's book For the Love of Skiing: A Visual History. The collection begins with Engen's draft book prospectus, continues with several draft versions of the work originally titled "Destiny to Fly," and is completed with a folder containing correspondence and other materials related to the final production of the published work. Several of the drafts contain handwritten or typed comments which show the growth and transformation of the book from concept to final version. Much of the draft material was reviewed by Greg Thompson; Engen's notes and the editor's correspondence to Thompson reflect the collaborative effort behind the book's creation. Additional correspondence between Mr. Engen, editors, reviewers, and others offer insight into the diversity of interest in the book, as well as the complexity of its publishing history. This material was donated by Alan Engen in 1998.

The 2012 and 2013 addendums of the Alan K. Engen papers contain correspondence, subject files, and other historical materials pertaining to the history of the Engen family, Utah ski history, and ski history in general.

A few oversize scrapbooks detailing the history of skiing have been digitized and are available online.

The collection also includes material related to various aspects of Alf Engen's life, including articles, meeting minutes, press releases, pamphlets, correspondence, and business records relating to the Alf Engen Ski School, the Alf Engen Company, the Alf Engen Museum, Alta Ski Area, the Deseret News Ski School, and other ski-related topics.
