Biographical Note

Lindsey (1832-1900) was an 1849 English convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) who, before immigrating to Utah in 1859, worked as a missionary for that church in England and Scotland. He was a practitioner of polygamy, marrying Bithiah Savill in 1859 (divorced 1891), Mary Ann Brewer in 1863 (divorced 1863), and Emma Munns in 1877. Between 1865 and 1879, he was the owner and operator of Lindsey Gardens, a Salt Lake City amusement park located in the Avenues neighborhood. In 1878, he moved to Ogden, Utah, where he also operated several businesses. In the 1920s, the property formerly occupied by Lindsey gardens was restored and then, in 1928, acquired by Salt Lake City, which designated it as park with the same name.
