Scope and Contents
The Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha of Utah records (1900-1998) contain annual reports, by-laws, a constitution, minutes, memos, course and election requirements, and correspondence. Histories of the Alpha chapter in Utah provide more insight to the society during the 1930's and 1940's. Constitutions from 1982 to 1995 are also present. The original order of the collection was maintained. Also, the current liberal course requirements for membership in the society are available. Nineteen issues of the Phi Beta Kappa Journal, American Scholar, have been removed from the collection.

Historical Note
Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest honorary society in the United States. The first chapter was founded in 1776. The Alpha chapter at the University of Utah was founded in 1935. Phi Beta Kappa is committed to academic excellence and fosters that by recognizing the elite in the academic community. The society also provides a visiting scholar program, where scholars from other institutions are invited to offer a lecture or series of lectures.

The Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha of Utah records (1900-1998) contain annual reports, by-laws, a constitution, minutes, memos, course and election requirements, and correspondence. Phi Beta Kappa, founded in 1776, is the oldest honorary society in the United States. The Alpha chapter at the University of Utah was founded in 1935. The society recognizes the elite in the academic community and sponsors a visiting scholar program in which scholars from other institutions are invited to present lectures at the University of Utah.
