Scope and Contents

The Charles Smith Merrill papers (1968-1982) consist of materials composed and utilized by Smith in his personal writings and LDS doctrinal studies. This collection includes genealogical records relative to the Cardy and Crouch families; a large selection of personal poetry composed by Merrill, and research notes relative to LDS Church history, cosmology, scripture and spirituality. The collection also includes a copy of his manuscript "For Heaven's Sake, Save Thyself" in two volumes, and a sketchbook containing his drawings depecting the "LDS Plan of Salvation."

Biographical Sketch

Charles Smith Merill, 1890-1988, was born 27 April 1980 in Deseret Territory. He was the 14th child of Clarence and Bathsheba Smith Merrill. He resided primarily in Salt Lake City, Utah, with the exeception of a few months spent in Montana and six years in Hawaii. Merill was involved in various business venurtures in Utah, Oregon, Washington, and Montana. Notably, he controlled interest in a string of mortuaries (including Deseret Mortuary in Salt Lake City, Utah) and operated a casket and clothing factory. He established Lake Hills Cemetary, Guardian Benefit Insurance Company, Merrill Manor Mills, Bengal Mining Company, Empire Realty, Farmers' Alliance, and the Merrill Farms and Dairy, as well as others.

Abstract

The Charles Smith Merrill papers (1968-1982) consist of personal papers, writings (mainly poetry), and research notes from Latter Day Saints doctrinal studies. Also included, are genealogical research materials relative to the Cardy and Crouch families. Charles Smith Merrill resided primarily in Salt Lake City and established various businesses, including the Lake Hills Cemetery, Guardian Benefit Insurance Co., Merrill Manor Mills, Bengal Mining Co., Empire Realty, Farmers' Alliance, and the Merrill Farms and Dairy.
