Scope and Contents

The Hillary W. St. Clair papers (1896-1997) contain published research authored by Hillary St. Clair, correspondence, calculations, notes, workbooks, working files, subject files and research articles. Materials of particular interest include St. Clair's notes and lecture material regarding the history of American mining. This was later published by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in a book called Mineral Industry in Early America.

Biographical Sketch

Hillary W. St. Clair (1909-1987) was born on 14 July, 1909, to Edwin and Pearl Walters St. Clair in Ophir, Utah. He was a graduate of the University of Utah, and also received his master's degree from the same institution in mining and metallurgy in 1931. He married Carmen Cropper on 1 July, 1930, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and together they had two children. St. Clair was a prominent metallurgist for the U.S. Bureau of Mines from 1935-1972, although he remained affiliated with the bureau until his death in 1987. He was chief of the Minerals Technology Branch for the Bureau's Eastern Division in the 1950s, and later assigned special independent research until his retirement in 1972.
