Organizational History

The Atchison and Pike's Peak Railroad, also known as the Central Branch, was part of the Transcontinental Railroad. The Kansas territorial legislature awarded the railroad power to build from Atchison west to the Kansas-Colorado border in 1859, and tribal lands were secured for the railroad in an 1862 treaty between the Kickapoo and the U.S. government. The railroad became affiliated with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1880.
