Biographical Sketch

Dr. Joseph Smith Peery was born 6 February 1911, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the son of Joseph Stras Peery and Julina Smith. He graduated with honors from the University of Utah and went on to receive his Ph.D. at Northwestern University. He returned to the University of Utah and became Dean of the College of Business from 1974 to 1976. For his work as a professor of finance and economics at the University of Utah he earned many distinguished awards, including the Brady Superior Teaching Award in 1992 Joe founded his own store, Seagull Drug, in Sugarhouse at only 26, helped to establish an MBA program with the United States Air Force in Europe, authored the Tracy Trend letter, did editorials for KSL known as the "What's Right with America" series, and was one of the first men to run the middle fork of the Salmon River.

Peery died 19 August 2006 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
