Historical Note

Francis Armstrong (1839-1899) was a Mormon who was monogamous. As a result, he was elected Mayor of Salt Lake City in 1886, and also took control of the LDS Church assets and businesses before they could be seized by the U.S. government. In 1888 he built the Utah Commerical and Savings Bank building (designed by Richard K.A. Kletting) at 22 East 100 South. Armstrong was also a director of the Salt Lake Railway, and of the Utah Power Company and the Western Loan and Savings Company.
