Scope and Contents

The collection consists of photographs of commercial, institutional and residential structures in Salt Lake City designed by Mr. Snedaker, as well as some personal portraits and snapshots. The collection is divided in two sections, personal and business. The brief personalsection includes portraits of Mr. Snedaker, his wife and children. A notable picture is a threegeneration photograph dated 1910 of the young Mr. Snedaker, his father and grandmother. Also included are pictures of Mr. Snedaker receiving awards. The personal section is kept inchronological order. The business photographs document many of the notable structures designed by Mr.Snedaker. This section is divided into three parts: commercial, institutional and residential.Though some dates are available it is difficult to determine whether the date records thestructure's completion or the photograph. Therefore, these parts are filed alphabetically. Refer tothe architectural drawings for possible structure dates.Of the business section the commercial part is the most extensive. The photographs show exterior views, and in some cases the interior views are available. The institution sectionconsists of public buildings, such as the Federal Building. The residence section spans Mr.Snedaker's career. Each of these sections has portions filed in the oversize box. Please note that the file contains a large number of high quality 8 x 10 black and whitenegatives. Some prints are available from these negatives. There are also several rolls of colornegatives without prints.

Biographical Note

Ross Lloyd Snedaker was born December 19, 1905, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Except forhis college years, he lived in Salt Lake City the rest of his life. He graduated from East HighSchool in 1923. After two years (1923-25) in the University of Utah engineering program, hetransferred to the University of Michigan where he received his Bachelor of Architecture in1928. He went on to earn his Master degree at Harvard University (1928-31). While in schooland in his first years after graduation, Snedaker worked seasonal and part time jobs in architectoffices in Boston, Ogden and Salt Lake City.Snedaker received his license to practice architecture in Utah in 1932 and established hisown practice in 1933. He was a senior partner in Snedaker, Budd and Watts, and then a principalpartner in Snedaker, Budd, Monroe and Associates. The office was located in the Utah Savingsand Trust Building on Main Street from 1937-1957. The business moved to 12 Post Office Placein 1957. Snedaker was also licensed in Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado. Snedaker was active in the local organizations. He was a prominent member of the UtahChapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), serving as president in 1945 as well asother elective offices. He was also a member of Theta Tau (Engineering Fraternity), the SaltLake City Public Library Board, Alta Club, and Rotary Club. Snedaker felt the architect "mustbecome intimately involved with life and development of his community." In his later years,Snedaker attempted to compile sketches of architects of Utah's past.
