Biographical / Historical
Miles Pratt Romney (1903-1980) was born in Colonial Dublan in Chihuahua, Mexico to Gaskell Romney and Anna Amelia Pratt Romney. Miles Park Romney, his grandfather, was one of the original settlers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints colonies in Mexico. Miles Pratt Romney was raised in Mexico until the Mexican Revolution, when the Romney family was driven back to the United States in 1912 by revolutionary rebel groups. The Romney family lived in Los Angeles and Idaho before settling in Salt Lake City, Utah. Between 1923 and 1926, Miles served a mission for the L.D.S. Church in South Africa. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of Utah, and started his career as a geologist in 1936 with the U.S. Smelting Company, where he remained until 1951. In 1970, he became the president of the United Park City Mines Company, a position he held until his death on December 9, 1980.
