Scope and Contents

The Gordon Benson Ramsey papers (1948-1983) consists primarily of original and printed scores written by Ramsey. The first series consists of drafts, notes, and book entitled Counterpoint written by Ramsey and Harold Knapik. The second and fourth series consist of original, printed, and copies of scores and sheet music written by Ramsey. The third series consists of course materials, notebooks, and reports from his time at the University of Utah.

Biographical / Historical

Gordon Benson Ramsey was born in Bingham Canyon, Utah on April 11, 1926 to George Brinton Ramsey and Flossie Forrester Benson. Ramsey was an accomplished composer and jazz musician. During World War II, he served in the United States Army where he played trumpet in the band and wrote shows for troops in Hawaii. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1950. Ramsey passed away on June 19, 2006.
