The Kenji and Helen Shiratori Shiozawa papers (1925-2017) consist of photos, diaries, school documents, personal and professional certificates, yearbooks, and correspondence primarily by Kenji Shiozawa with additional materials relating to Helen Shiozawa. Historical Note
Kenji Shiozawa was born on March 26, 1916 in Rigby Idaho. He graduated from Rigby High School in 1935 and attended Brigham Young University and Utah State University, graduating from USU in 1945 with a B.A. in Landscape Architecture. At BYU, Kenji met Helen Shiratori and the two married on June 26, 1944 in the Salt Lake Temple. He served in the Military Intelligence Service during WWII, and after an honorary discharge from service, completed a Masters of Landscape Architecture degree from USU in 1949. He taught in the Department of Landscape Architecture at USU until 1959, worked as District Landscape Architect for the California Division of Beaches and Parks, and finally functioned as a Landscape Architect Supervisor for the U.S. Forest Service. Shiozawa died in Ogden, Utah on July 24, 1999.
Helen Teruko Shiratori Shiozawa was born in Rexburg, Idaho on June 20, 1920. She attended Madison High School and graduated as valedictorian. She attended Brigham Young University, graduated in 1945 with a Bachelor of Science degree, and received her Masters of Education from Utah State University in 1972. She taught elementary school for 29 years in California and Utah, until her retirement in 1983, after which she continued to volunteer at Valley Elementary. Helen and Kenji were parents to two children, Gail and Dennis. Helen died on January 26, 2020, in Glendale, California.
