Scope and Contents
This collection contains photographs used to illustrate the book, "The Genteel Gentile: Letters of Elizabeth Cumming, 1857-1858" published by the Tanner Trust Fund. Elizabeth Cumming was the wife of territorial governor Alfred Cumming and her letters describe her journey to Utah and her impressions of Salt Lake City. The collection contains photographs of Salt Lake City buildings and scenes, prominent Utahns, and drawings of the coming of Johnston's Army to Utah in 1858.

Abstract
The Guide to the Genteel Gentile photograph collection contains images used in the book entitled, "The Genteel Gentile: Letters of Elizabeth Cumming, 1857-1858." Also included are portraits, photographs of sketches illustrating scenes during the Utah Expedition, and views of landscapes and buildings in Utah.
