Scope and Contents
The Kevin G. Barnhurst photograph collection contains color and black-and-white photographs and negatives of unidentified men and color photographs of Mountain Spaa Resort in Utah and an ACT UP protest. The images of men include artistic male nudity. The images date from approximately 1980 to 1995.

Biographical Note
Kevin G. Barnhurst was born on December 22, 1951, in Salt Lake City, Utah to D.J. and Venice Mendenhall Barnhurst. In 1978, Barnhurst married Lucinda Anne Nightingale; the two divorced in 1986. He later married Richard Doherty. Barnhurst graduated from Brigham Young University in 1975 with a B.A. in Latin American Studies and a M.A. in Mass Communications in 1979. Between 1978 and 1979, Barnhurst headed the establishment and subsequent publication of The New Messenger and Advocate, a publication themed around The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which, shortly after its inception, merged with another religious magazine, The Sunstone. Barnhurst obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam in 1997. In 1998, he became a faculty member at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), where he taught until 2012. After retiring from UIC, Barnhurst joined the University of Leeds’ Institute of Communications Studies as chair of Communication in the Digital Era. As a scholar of mass communication, Barnhurst published numerous articles, books, and op-eds, including Seeing the Newspaper , Mister Pulitzer and the Spider: Modern News from Realism to the Digital, and Media Queered: Visibility and Its Discontents, which he edited. In addition to his scholarship, Barnhurst was an activist for LGBTQ rights, particularly through the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP). Kevin G. Barnhurst died on June 2, 2016.
