Historical Note

Russ Harmer began working at Alta ski resort in Utah around 1967; he held various jobs there, including equipment foreman, slope groomer, and assistant general manager. Located in the Wasatch range outside of Salt Lake City, Alta is one of the oldest ski areas in the United States. In 1935, the United States Forest Service commissioned Norwegian skier Alf Engen to evaluate the former mining town of Alta for its recreation potential. Engen recommended it as a good spot for a ski area, and in 1937, a group of Salt Lake City businessmen, led by lawyer Joe Quinney, formed the Utah Winter Sports Association to develop Alta, which opened for visitors in 1939. In 1996, the resort implemented snowmaking machines. In the 21st century, Alta worked to modernize its lifts and facilities. 2001, Alta and nearby Snowbird partnered to offer access to both resorts.
