Scope and Contents
The Saburo "Sam" Shimomura digital photograph collection consists of 103 digital only black-and-white and color photographs. The collection contains images of Sam Shimomura during his service in the United States Army during the Korean War dating from 1950 to 1953. The collection also contains digitized copies of color photographs taken at a 2003 Veteran's Day event honoring Korean War veterans and displaying a memorial to Utah soldiers who died in the conflict.

Biographical Note
Saburo "Sam" Shimomura was born in San Francisco, California, on November 17, 1927 to Toshinaga and Taka Shimomura. After the outbreak of World War II, Shimomura and his family were incarcerated in the converted Tanforan Race Track facility in California before being transferred to Topaz War Relocation Center, a concentration camp in Delta, Utah. Before the end of the war, the Shinomura family was released to work in Ogden, Utah; from there, Sam Shimomura was drafted into the United States Army. Shimomura was assigned to Army intelligence as an interpreter in post-WWII Korea. After the Korean War started, Shimomura volunteered for duty near the Chosin Reservoir. He was captured in December 1950 by Chinese forces in an ambush at Hell File Valley enroute to his assignment. He escaped from captivity in April 1951 and was rescued by U.S. troops.
After his discharge from the Army, Shimomura worked in the field of weapons systems appropriations. On November 23, 1961, Sam Shimomura married Catherine (Katie) Sunata. Shimamura’s career led the couple to live around the United States, including California and Washington D.C. Upon retiring, Sam and Katie Shimamura retired to Salt Lake City, Utah to be near their family. Sam Shimamura died in 2009.
