Historical Note
The Kings River is a river in California that originates in the Sierra Crest around the Kings Canyon and drains from the Sierra Nevada mountains. The river diverges into three main forks. The area was originally inhabited by the Yokuts and other Native groups. Beginning with the 1850 statehood for California, the area was increasingly colonized by settlers, many of whom established logging operations. Starting in 1870, increased settlement led to the creation of canals for irrigation, and by 1913 nearly all of the river's water was being used for irrigation for agriculture. This development caused the destruction of most of the area's wetlands. In 1954, the Pine Flat Dam was constructed on the river primarily for flood control, with incidental usage for irrigation, hydroelectric power, and recreation. Other branches and tributaries of the Kings River have also been dammed.
