Biographical Note
Laura May Adams Armer was born on January 12, 1874 in Sacramento, California. Between 1893 and 1896, she studied painting and drawing at the California School of Design in San Francisco with Arthur Matthews. She also pursued photography, establishing a photography studio in 1899. In 1902, Laura Adams married Sidney Armer, a fellow artist. Following her marriage, Laura Adams Armer moved her photography studio to Berkeley, California. In the 1920s, Armer became interested in the Native Americans of the Southwest and began photographing and drawing members of the Hopi and Navajo nations on their territory. During this time, Armer began to write children’s books about Native American culture which were illustrated with her photographs and art as well as illustrations by her husband, Sydney Armer. In 1932, Armer won the Newbery Medal for her novel Waterless Mountain. Laura Adams Armer died in Humboldt County, California, on March 16, 1963.
