Scope and Contents

The Jack Burton photograph collection consists of 1 box containing 12 black-and-white photographs depicting Burton during his time as a track and field athlete, as well as other athletes, including of football. Many of the young men depicted in the photographs were University of Utah student athletes, but others are from other, unidentified institutions and teams. In addition to track and field, the photographs depict football and baseball players. The photographs date from approximately 1925 to 1930. The photographs were removed from a scrapbook following donation.

Biographical Note

John Christopher “Jack” Burton (1906-1960) was born on April 6, 1906, in Kaysville, Utah, to Emily Flint and Charles Tingey Burton. He attended Davis High in Ogden, Utah, where he was a successful student athlete, competing nationally and setting records in the 440- and 880-yard dashes. Burton continued his athletic career at the University of Utah from 1926 to 1928. During this time, Burton was a member of the track team, serving as its captain, under coach Ike Armstrong. In 1928, he was injured during Olympic trials in New York. After graduation, Jack Burton coached the Union Pacific track team in Los Angeles, California. According to his obituary, Burton married Helen Holland (1907-1948) on September 26, 1936. Burton worked as a salesman and in construction. Jack Burton died on September 18, 1960.

Abstract

During this time, he served as captain of the track team under coach Ike Armstrong. The Jack Burton photograph collection consists of photographs of Burton and other University of Utah athletes dating from approximately 1925 to 1930.
