Biographical Note

Bruce John Roberts (1949-2010) was born in 1949. He attended the University of Utah to pursue his interest in journalism and social justice. As a student at the University, Roberts edited the sports section of the Daily Utah Chronicle. He later founded The Street paper. In 1975, Jones brought Ken Sanders and Roberts on as partners for The Cosmic Aeroplane, a book and record store in Salt Lake City. The Cosmic Aeroplane was opened in 1967 by Steve Jones at its original location of 871 E. 900 South. When Roberts joined, the shop had recently moved to 366 S. West Temple; in 1976, the business relocated to 258 E. 100 South. In this location, Coscmic Aeroplane Books gained a reputation as a gathering place for Salt Lake City’s counterculture movement; it also gained increasing financial success. In 1981, Roberts bought out Sanders’ share, and in 1982 purchased Jones’ share of the business. Cosmic Aeroplane Books closed in 1991. In addition to his involvement in Cosmic Aeroplane Books, Roberts worked as a concert promoter for bands playing at venues like the Union Ballroom and the Utah State Fairgrounds Coliseum. He also worked as director of marking and sales for the University of Utah Press. Bruce Roberts died in 2010.
